Fall in Crested Butte: Where to See the Colors
There is something special about fall in Crested Butte. After a lively summer, the pace begins to slow, crisp mornings return, and the mountainsides light up with golden aspens.
Having lived in the Gunnison Valley for more than 30 years, I’ve come to love each season for its own character. Summer brings long days and endless outdoor adventures, while winter transforms the valley into a snowy mountain playground. But fall has a charm all its own.
From scenic drives and colorful trails to quiet moments around town, here are a few of my favorite ways to experience fall in Crested Butte.
When Do Fall Colors Arrive in Crested Butte?

Fall colors typically begin appearing in September, with the timing changing based on elevation, temperatures, and weather conditions.
This year, the colors are arriving earlier than usual in some areas. As of mid-September, golden aspens are already visible around Gothic Valley, Ohio Pass, Washington Gulch, and areas near town. Other locations, including Kebler Pass and the Slate River Valley, are just beginning to change.
The best approach is to stay flexible. Color conditions can change quickly, and different areas reach their peak at different times.
1. Gothic Valley
Gothic Valley is one of my favorite areas to explore during the fall. The combination of golden aspens, open meadows, and dramatic mountain views makes it a beautiful place for a scenic drive or an afternoon hike.
Judd Falls is a popular nearby hike and a wonderful way to experience the changing season.
2. Washington Gulch
Washington Gulch offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains, along with aspen groves that begin turning gold throughout September.
It’s a lovely area for a scenic drive, photography, or simply taking a little extra time to enjoy the landscape.
3. Ohio Pass
Ohio Pass is another beautiful place to look for fall colors. The road winds through aspen-covered hillsides and offers opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.
For those who want to stretch their legs, the Beaver Ponds Trail near Ohio Pass is a great option.
4. Kebler Pass
Kebler Pass is well known for its extensive aspen forests and is one of the most popular destinations for fall foliage near Crested Butte.
The colors can change quickly throughout the pass, so check local updates and road conditions before heading out.
5. Around Town
You don’t always need to leave Crested Butte to enjoy fall colors. Aspen groves around town, local walking paths, and nearby trails offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the season.
The Woods Walk, Slate River area, and trails around Mt. Crested Butte are all worth exploring when the leaves begin to change.
What Is the Weather Like in Fall?
Fall weather in Crested Butte can be beautiful, but it is important to be prepared for changing conditions.
You might experience sunny afternoons, chilly mornings, cold evenings, and even an early snowfall. I recommend dressing in layers and bringing a warm jacket, particularly if you plan to spend time outdoors.
Weather can vary significantly between town, mountain passes, and higher-elevation trails. Check the forecast before heading out and plan accordingly.
